Tips and Frequently Asked Questions

Why are hems important?

A bad hem can easily ruin an article of clothing. The quickest way to determine if an item is hemmed properly is to look at its seams. If the seams are torn, crooked, has threads that are loose, or looks sloppy, the seam is likely weak and needs replacing. Very low quality hems are easy to recognize. Often times, it appears as if the tailor or clothing producer turned the extra fabric upside down and sewed it in place. This type of hem is unreliable and should be replaced.

The ideal hem lets the fabric keep its shape and looks professionally done. If you need something hemmed, or even to have a hem re-done, look no further, Alterations Etc will take care of all of your hemming needs, satisfaction guaranteed.

When should I start thinking about getting something altered?

Many companies and alteration shops require no less than 4 weeks to get a project done. With a busy schedule, this is often easy to forget. At Alterations Etc, we can get any minor project done in less than 4 days, with large complicated projects taking closer to a week.

You should err on the side caution, just in case your schedule does not permit last minute alterations, but to keep it safe, you should start thinking about alterations somewhere around a month away from the special event. We do offer an express service option, for those unforeseeable emergencies that require alterations. Depending on the service, we may add a small upcharge, but we can get the job done in just around a day.

What should I bring to any of the fittings?

As far as materials go, you should never need to bring anything when coming to Alterations Etc. We do, however recommend, that you bring shoes, garments, and maybe accessories to fittings that are for wedding dresses or prom dresses, as alterations could differ slightly depending on these things. If you have not decided on what shoes to wear for a special event, just bring a pair that may be close in height to what you are planning for.

What if I decide I do not like an alteration or if an alteration is not up to my expectations?

We understand that things can change, you may find a style that suits you better, etc. We offer a 14-day satisfaction guarantee that assures you are content with the alteration, or your money back.

How do I know my alteration is ready?

When you are finished with your fitting or consultation, all of the work that needs to be done will be documented on a small form, including price, pickup date, and receipt of payment that you will keep. Sometimes we may finish an alteration even quicker than expected, so if you have any questions regarding your order feel free to give us a call.

Do I need an appointment?

At many alteration shops, you do need an appointment and walk-ins are impossible. However, at Alterations Etc, we understand that it can sometimes be tedious to schedule appointments, and most of the time you may only have 5 or 10 minutes to pop in. For this reason, we gladly accept walk-ins. Our staff is happy to help you as soon as you walk in the door and we will take care of measurements and alterations quickly and efficiently.
